400 A Comparative Study of Intracapsular & Extracapsular Coblation Paediatric Tonsillectomy in A Tertiary Centre

Abstract Background Intracapsular tonsillectomy has emerged as a novel alternative to traditional where the tonsillar capsule is left intact with small amount of overlying tissue. There growing evidence suggest that intracapsular associated reduced post-operative pain, haemorrhage and readmission rates. The aim this study was assess reported benefits within ENT department at tertiary paediatric hospital. Method Retrospective analysis comparing two cohorts 72 consecutive patients undergoing coblation extracapsular between March-2019 November-2020. Patient age procedure, removal adenoids, indication, surgeon grade, discharge time were recorded. Post-tonsillectomy bleeding 30-day rates used main outcome measures. Results median in both groups 5 years. cohort demonstrated lower rate (8.3% vs. 15.3%), primary (<24 hours) post-op bleed (0% 2.78%) secondary (>24hours) (4.2% 12.5%) when compared cohort. Eight cases conducted day total, all Intracapsular, none these requiring 30 days. Discussion Coblation an effective low-risk techniques. It hoped risks morbidity can move towards case procedures resulting reduction overall healthcare costs improved patient experience.
